Miami Open: Jannik Sinner creates Masters 1000 history and breaks Novak Djokovic's set record during third-round win

Jannik Sinner made ATP Masters 1000 history after breaking a Novak Djokovic record during his third-round win over Corentin Moutet at the Miami Open.

The Italian needed just 71 minutes to see off Moutet 6-1 6-4 inside the Hard Rock Stadium, booking himself a fourth-round meeting against American Alex Michelsen.

Sinner's third-round victory means he has now won 26 consecutive sets at the Masters 1000 level, breaking the previous record of 24 held by Djokovic since 2016.

"I am very happy," Sinner said after his win. "This sport is unpredictable, so we try to keep attention as much as we can and we'll see what is coming in the next round."

Sinner arrived at the tournament having won the Paris Masters in November and the Indian Wells Masters title without dropping a set, with the second seed initially equalling Djokovic's record during his second-round win over Damir Džumhur.

He can now extend it further on Tuesday against unseeded Michelsen, who came from a set down to beat Chile's Alejandro Tabilo 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Sinner is bidding to become the first player since Roger Federer in 2017 to win the 'Sunshine Double' of Indian Wells and Miami in the same year, while Carlos Alcaraz's third-round exit on Sunday means he can further close the gap on the Spaniard in the battle for world No 1.

Frances Tiafoe saved two match points before knocking out defending champion Jakub Mensik in a dramatic tie-break to reach the last 16.

Tiafoe saved two match points before converting his seventh opportunity to earn a dramatic 7-6 4-6 7-6(11) win, his 250th tour-level victory, with Terence Atmane awaiting in the fourth round.

Atmane earlier in the day upset Felix Auger-Aliassime, winning 6-3 1-6 6-3 to reach the last 16 of a Masters 1000 event for just the second time in his career.

Third seed Alexander Zverev defeated Marin Cilic 6-2 5-7 6-4 and will face Quentin Halys next, while Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo advanced to the fourth round with a 6-0 4-6 7-5 win over Daniil Medvedev.
